So ends the short-lived dream of RPing anything Legend of Korra-related.

For a couple of hours I’ve been searching around for communities and tumblr accounts I could interact with if I made an account, and most of the accounts on here have been deactivated or inactive for 10-11 months. The only other thing I found was for a ProBoards site that appears very well organized and active, but I’m still not all that sure about it. It seems a bit too elaborate fore me to wrap my head around (at least at this time of night).

Maybe it’ll pick back up on tumblr once more announcements for Book 2 come out…or I may just have to wait until Book 2 starts airing. Meh; serves me right for waiting so long to watch it.

Maybe I can satiate my desire to do something LOK-related if maybe I thought of a character I want to cosplay in the future, but the problem with the Avatar series is that most, if not all of the characters are so great, it’s hard for a specific one to really jump out at me cosplay-wise…

Now I have to wait for the second season…

Personal thoughts on the series follows; click if you want to see my ramblings, but feel free to ignore if you don’t want to.

Okay, overall, it was pretty good continuation. You just have to expect things to be different than the original series given the time and events that have passed. A lot of people complain about how different everything is or how things like technology have advanced since the previous series. But, 70 years have passed between the two. Of course things are going to be different! Think about 70 years ago in our world. We didn’t have half the technology we do now. It may seem weird in the Avatar series because it was apparent that not an exceptional amount changed in the 100 years Aang was frozen, but keep in mind that the entire world was also in the middle of a war during those 100 years. Once it dissolved and all the nations started working together, things were bound move quickly from that point on.

Now that that little rant’s out of the way, I’d say the only complaints I had are ones people already expressed when the season had just come out. It seemed the theme of the first season was focusing on how important bending was, and while it is important in the World of Avatar, it didn’t really celebrate the strength that non-benders have like the first series did. Think of the original series really quick, and plenty of great, non-bender characters come to mind, like Sokka, Suki, Mai, Ty Lee, Yue, Teo, the Freedom Fighters, and several others. Try to name some from LOK and you get Asami, her father, the Lieutenant, and really no one else aside from a bunch of faceless chi blockers and some really minor characters. Yes I understand that there’s only so many characters that the could bring in in the course of 12 episodes, but I’m hoping the new season will bring in some more non-bending characters to make up for that.

One thing that was also definitely different was it was a bit more focused around romance and love triangles than the original series was. In ways this is more understandable. In the original series, the entire world was in the middle of a war, and since it was the main characters’ goal to bring it to an end, relationships had to take a bit of a backseat and they had more to worry about. Another thing in LOK is that the main cast is all around a bit older than the original series’ cast, which probably opened more doors for the love problems and such.

Although I think Legend of Korra will have to work a bit harder to reach the same level the original series did, I think it’s off to a good start. I’m looking forward to seeing it progress and what they come up with.

Season/Book 2 thoughts so far

Characters I want to see return (that have a strong chance of not returning if they don’t need ‘em):

Tahno—though only appearing in 3 episodes (and only technically being a strongly featured character for only one of those episodes), he showed a lot of character development within those three episodes, and you can see it a lot after he loses his bending. When he talks to Korra afterwards, he doesn’t try to blame her for not stopping Amon from taking his bending, or not even failing to capture him that night. I think it shows that, although he doesn’t say it, he is taking a sort of responsibility for his own actions, and may even feel guilty about his behavior before the incident. Since we can probably expect Korra went back to the Republic City to restore everyone’s lost bending, it’d be very interesting to see him again and how he’d turn out after coming back from that low point in his life.

Personal hopes: I’m not sure of the exact sources for this, but people are saying that while Mako and Korra will not return to pro-bending, Bolin will. This could very possibly mean that he might invite Tahno to be the water bender for the new team. I know there’s a strong possibility it won’t happen, but it sure would be nice. At the very least, if Tahno and the Wolfbats come back, hopefully they’ll be friendly rivals with the new team.

General Iroh II—and I’m sure a lot of people feel the same way. I think that’s another character whose story we want to see, but given his position as a general of the United Forces, he may not be able to become a prominently-featured character. At least not with how everything is at the moment. It’s possible he can be featured more if he stayed behind to help the Republic City, such as maybe trying to flush out former Equalists or something. Personally, I want to know how old Iroh II is, too. When I saw him, I originally thought he’d at least be in his early 20’s, but he has the same VA as Zuko, which is cool, but it brings down his age by quite a few years. At this point, I can see him being the oldest of the teens of the new Team Avatar, but that still doesn’t say how old he is and I’m curious.

Personal hopes: It’d be very unlikely for him to become the fire bender of Bolin’s new pro-bending team, but wouldn’t that be something to see? At this point, just more screen time would be enough for me. It’d also be cool to see how the Fire Nation area has progressed since the end of the war.

Lieutenant—I’m not sure why. I guess because that even though he was Amon’s right-hand man and given a lot of screen time, we really don’t know a whole lot about him. In his confrontation with Amon, he stated that he modeled his life after him. It makes you wonder how they met and how Amon was able to be such an influence on him. If the Lieutenant is even 10 years younger, that gives a lot of potential for Amon to have met him at a young age and start putting anti-bending thoughts in his head. In addition, it’s not known if he gets arrested following Amon’s defeat, so he could’ve very well escaped. This could leave the possibility of him showing up later in the series continuing to be an antagonist, but there’s also the chance for an antihero or a completely reformed villain. Of course, it could always go the way Avatar sometimes does and he’ll just be a nameless character until the end of time (or maybe at least until the creators give him a name in an interview or something).

Personal hopes: Just a backstory and a name would be nice. I’m not sure if I’d like to see him as a continued antagonist, but if he simply moves up to being a sort of antihero, I wouldn’t mind that either.

Hopes and thoughts in general:

Given that the first season of Korra was supposed to be the only season, it’d be interesting to see how they bring it up from where they left off. The title of Book 2 is going to be “Spirits”, and they say that plays on Korra finally being able to tap into the spiritual aspect of being the Avatar in the season finale. The released concept art of these shadowy monster things might hint at the main conflict being spirit-related as well. And, if that’s the case, it’s a wonder who exactly is going to be the main antagonist of the new season (or even the rest of the series).

There’s also shown to be a change of scenery to the Southern Water Tribe for at least one episode, as seen in some of the newly released characters and screenshots. Given that the last season ended at the Southern Water Tribe, we can expect it to be the location for the first few episodes, at the very least. At least, that’s more plausible than them starting out in the Republic City and then returning to the South Pole later on. Although I wouldn’t mind a few episodes in that setting, I hope it’s not the only setting we’ll see.

They haven’t released an exceptional amount of new characters just yet, but I think the two that are causing the most stir are Eska and Densa. I’d like to see more them, too.

And of course we know one of the sub-plots of the series is going to be Mako and Korra’s relationship. I think this will be an interesting change from the original series, as romantic relationships, though present all throughout the series, were’t exceptionally featured until Book 3 (the only exceptions being Sokka with both Suki and Yue, if I remember correctly). And, given Asami is now Mako’s ex, we’ll get to see if things become awkward between her and him or even her and Korra. But, Asami is one of the more mature and understanding characters, so she has the potential to brush it off and keep the friendship like Bolin did.

I guess this is really more or less the “thoughts” section because I’m not sure what exactly I’m hoping for with the new season (other than what I’m hoping for the specific characters above). I guess the one thing about Avatar or any series is that you can be a lot of hope into specific things you want to happen because the new season can go in an entirely different direction than what you think/hope will happen.

I guess the trick now will just be to be patient and wait. That’s the worse part of any on-going series…
